How do you actually bet live without it turning into chasing?

Short answer
Live betting done right is a planned price target from before the game, not a decision made during it.Live betting done wrong is chasing a losing bet, or a comeback that feels certain, in real time. The test is simple: did you want this exact position before kickoff, or only because of what's happening on the scoreboard right now?

Live betting gets a bad reputation, and most of that reputation is earned, just not by the tool itself. It's earned by how most people actually use it: as a way to react to a game in progress instead of a way to execute a decision they already made.

The right way: a planned price target, not a live decision

Say you liked a team at -7.5 before kickoff, but didn't love giving up that many points. If their opponent scores early, that same team might become available live at -2.5. If you already wanted that side and were just waiting for a better number, taking it now is the same pregame decision, executed at a better price. The position existed in your head before the game did. Live betting here is a tool for patience, not a new idea invented mid-game.

The wrong way: chasing the game you're currently losing

The failure mode is betting live because of what's currently happening to your bankroll or your emotions, not because of a plan you made in advance.

Betting live specifically to win back a bet you're already losing. This is chasing losses, just faster and with a scoreboard providing the emotional pressure.
The 'no way they lose from here' trap. A good team down big to a bad team looks like a guaranteed comeback in the moment. Good teams lose to bad teams all the time, that's genuinely part of what makes it sports, and a lead that looks safe isn't a bet, it's a feeling.
Reacting to a single highlight play. One big momentum swing doesn't change the two teams' actual talent gap, even though it feels like it does while you're watching it happen.
The distinction that actually mattersSame live bet slip, two completely different decisions behind it.
PLANNED BEFORE KICKOFFA tool for a better number
You already wanted this exact position pregame
You're taking it now because the price improved
A specific number you were waiting for, not a feeling
The decision was made before the game started.
INVENTED MID-GAMEChasing with better production values
You're down on another bet and want it back now
"No way they lose from here" on a big lead
A reaction to a highlight, not a plan
The decision was made because of the scoreboard.

Why live markets are a harder environment to begin with

In-game markets are generally priced with wider margins than full-game lines, since the book is pricing in more real-time uncertainty and knows a meaningful share of live action comes from bettors reacting emotionally rather than executing a plan. That's a harder environment even before you factor in the biggest problem: there's no time to think, and the whole experience of watching a game swing in real time is built to provoke exactly the reaction that undermines good judgment.

The one test before you bet live
Ask yourself honestly: did you want this exact position before the game started, and are you only taking it now because the price improved? If the real answer involves "because I'm down" or "because it feels right watching this," that's the tell. Don't take it.
