What is a free bet and how does it work?
Sportsbooks hand out free bets constantly. Welcome bonuses, reload promos, promo codes, bet-and-get offers. They all look the same at first glance. Here is what a free bet actually does and what it is worth.
How a free bet pays out
A cash bet and a free bet pay differently when they win. When you place $100 cash and win, you get your $100 stake back plus your profit. When you place a $100 free bet and win, you get the profit only. The free bet stake disappears either way.
Say you have a $100 free bet on a team at -110. If your team wins, you collect $90.91. That is the full payout. If you had bet $100 of your own cash at -110 and won, you would get back $190.91: your $100 stake plus the $90.91 profit.
| Cash bet | Free bet | |
|---|---|---|
| Amount wagered | $100 of your money | $100 free bet |
| Win: total returned | $190.91 | $90.91 |
| Win: profit | $90.91 | $90.91 |
| Lose: your loss | $100 | $0 |
The profit if you win is identical. The difference is what happens to the stake.
What a $100 free bet is actually worth
Here is how to get the real cash value. Take the profit you would collect if you win, then multiply by the implied win probability from the odds.
At -110, the implied win probability is 110 divided by 210, which equals 52.4%.
That is not a scam. It is just the math. You are not risking any of your own money, so the upside is capped. The sportsbook is not giving you $100 in free cash. They are giving you one shot at $90.91 with no downside.
Heavy favorites are the worst use for a free bet
A heavy favorite has low odds, which means a low profit payout if you win. A $100 free bet on a -400 favorite pays only $25 if it wins.
Now put the same $100 free bet on a +200 team. If that team wins, you collect $200 in profit.
The bigger the profit if you win, the more value you pull out of a free bet. Placing it on a -400 favorite converts a $100 free bet into roughly $20. Placing it on a moderate underdog gets you close to $67. That difference is real.
Free bet vs. deposit match
These two promotions work differently.
Rollover requirements
A rollover requirement means you must place a certain amount in bets before you can withdraw any bonus money. A common structure: a $100 deposit match with a 5x rollover means you need to wager $500 before that bonus converts to cash you can pull out.
Free bets rarely have rollover requirements because the stake is already gone after one wager. Deposit match bonuses almost always do. Read the terms before you claim either one.
The short version
A free bet is not free cash. It is one shot at profit with no money at risk. At -110 odds, a $100 free bet is worth about $48 in real value. At +200, it is worth about $67. Heavy favorites waste a free bet. Moderate underdogs get more value out of them. And deposit match bonuses come with strings that free bets usually do not.
