Does line shopping actually make a meaningful difference?
Most bettors treat line shopping as a nice-to-have, something you'd do if it were convenient. It isn't a nice-to-have. It's one of the only edges available to every single bettor, on every single bet, that costs nothing but a few extra seconds, and the math behind it is bigger than it looks.
The half point that changes everything
Say a total is set at 44 at one sportsbook and 44.5 at another. The game finishes with a combined score of exactly 44. The bettor who shopped and took the 44 pushes, and gets their full $100 stake back. The bettor who took 44.5 at the first book they happened to open loses that same $100 outright. Same game, same pick, same real final score. The only difference between a push and a loss was which book had the better number sitting there.
Why this compounds over a season
That single-game example is dramatic because it lands on an exact number. The quieter, more important version of this happens on every bet you place, whether or not the final score lines up perfectly. Take a bettor with a real, proven 52.4% win rate, which happens to be exactly the break-even rate at standard -110 pricing. Betting $100 a game at -110 forever, that bettor nets almost nothing over time. That's not a flaw in their picks. It's what break-even actually looks like.
Now give that exact same bettor, same picks, same 52.4% win rate, a shopped average price of -105 instead. Nothing about their skill changed. Only the price did.
